"According to Ontario Vital Statistics Birth Records Bridget Jane
HAGGERTY born March 9, 1879 Osgoode Township, Ontario #003536." E-mail
from Peter Smeaton Oc.14,'95. -She had a twin brother, Patrick J.
Haggerty.
I had a this person recoreded simply as Jennie Higgerty before today,
Oc.15,'95. I had no birth date for her. I just new she fit here because
I saw her living in the same houshold in the 1902 city directory. I
renamed her today because Peter told me of Bridget Jane Haggerty. He new
Patrick had a twin sister. Instead of adding another sibling named
Bridget I changed Jennie to Bridget because I think it's the same person.
Was JENNIE Hagerty in 1901 census for Ottawa. Same birth date as Bridget
Jane birth record. Same house as the rest. Definately her. Dec. 10,
1995.

-Rita Mary Carmel was not the daughter of James M. Higgerty
"According to Tom Lough, James and Mary Gorman only stayed together for a
little while. Then Elizabeth Bradley said that the marriage only lasted
2 months. I suspect Rita's real father's name was Carmel.

On the marrriage record of her daughter Ann Ada it shows her name as
being Bridget Higgerty. This doesnt make sense so I did't enter it.

This from Peter Smeaton in an e-mail Sep. 26, '95.

Patrick being a member of the RCMP or NorthWest Mounted Police. Do you

Hi Will and Paul
I recieved a reply from the RCMP today with regards to Patrick Joseph
Higgerty.
I will make a copy of the letter for both of you and put it into my file
for you. The text is:
The service file of Patrick Joseph Higgerty is quite brief. Constable
Patrick Higgerty, Regimental Number 3529, engaged in the North-West
Mounted Police March31,1900 at Regina. He listed his previous occupation
as blacksmith and boilermaker; his previous residence as Ottawa. He had a
letter of recommendation from Powers&Co, Boilermakers and Blacksmiths,
located at 432 Wellington Street in Ottawa. His next-of-kin is listed as
his mother, Mrs. J. Haggerty, of 622 Somerset Street. The spelling may be
just a mistake by the person who took down the information. Constable
Higgerty served at Regina for a short period and then he was transferred
to the Yukon. He served at Tagish and Caribou Detachments and he left the
Force September 4,1901. He was discharged at Whitehorse. There is nothing
on the file after this point. At the time of engagement he was 5'10" and
169 pounds.
That's it.
Someone should have told the NWMP about the name changing game that the
family likes to play.
